Aug. 20, 2026—Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones held a press conference at McFee Elementary School on Aug. 13 to celebrate the 11 miles of new sidewalks installed around 13 CFISD campuses as part of the ongoing Sidewalks 4 Precinct 4 initiative.

Phase 1 of the initiative, launched in March 2024, was a $20 million investment that included 50 miles of new sidewalks, with 14.1 miles installed around 13 CFISD campuses. Phase 2 is a $16 million investment that includes 25 miles of new sidewalks, with 11 miles installed around an additional 13 CFISD campuses. Locations within one mile of schools, parks, bus stops and other important community sites have been prioritized.

“As a mom and former teacher, public safety is my top priority,” Commissioner Briones said. “These sidewalks in CFISD are part of the safety of our children and our families. I’m proud to say that all 26 CFISD schools within Precinct 4 now all have access to sidewalks. The five miles of sidewalks along Greenhouse Road were desperately needed. We’re proud to have delivered for our community.”

Precinct 4 is partnering with MUD 102 to install approximately 4.5 miles of sidewalks connecting Truitt Middle School to Horne Elementary School. More sidewalks are also being constructed by Jowell, Wilson, and Lieder elementary schools and Watkins Middle School.

“Commissioner Briones has stepped up for us in CFISD, not only for overall safety but for safe routes to school,” said Dr. Doug Killian, CFISD superintendent of schools. “I really do appreciate everything she’s been able to do for us. She and her team have been great partners in this initiative.”

In addition to sidewalks, the Precinct 4 Road and Bridge Team has repainted and added reflective material to more than 120 crosswalks across the precinct, making those crossways safer.

“One of the best things I do is stay away from busy streets whenever possible,” said Brycen Lee-Erskin, McFee fifth grade student. “Busy roads can have lots of cars moving quickly, which can make walking or biking more dangerous. Sidewalks are very helpful. It gives me a place to walk that’s separate from traffic. Sidewalks also make it easier to get around our neighborhood and connects us to McFee, parks and other places.”
